Four Traditional Levels of Sensitivity

With all styles of oriental bodywork there are 4 dimensions/levels of application that we can sensitize ourselves to.

These four sensitivities/comprehensions are:

  1. The Aura Level
  2. The Skin Level
  3. The Muscle Level and
  4. The Bone/Organ Levels

Individually, each level is a whole expression unto itself and contains the therapeutic potential of each of the other levels. Each dimension is also entirely capable of satisfactorily affecting the receiver without accessing the other levels. For example, a treatment that is only Auric in focus will produce any desired therapeutic effect that could be actualized from the other sensitivities. The same is true for a session that is entirely composed of just the Skin-Level focus or just the Muscle-Level focus, etc.

A skilled massage artist however choreographs a treatment’s protocol utilizing all the levels just as a musician improvises a song by adjusting the tempo, the texture or the crescendo. Surrendering your technique to the procedure that accesses only one level will demand your patience, faith and discipline in the classical knowledge and experience of the massage arts.

With Bodywork Therapy, it is an undeniable reality that we must always proceed initially from gentleness to firmness with our applications. To help us understand this important perspective better so that we will be most effective in our treatments, consider the following analogy of ‘sweetening our tea’. That is, we can always add more sugar [intensity] as is desirable during our session yet when too much sugar has been added, it is impossible to reverse.

The massage arts require finesse and savvy with each and every breath. Our vision must include the thought that ‘We are artists, We are not laborers’! With each of our steps, in each moment executing our expertise, please know that the person on the massage mat/table/chair is simultaneously our son, our daughter, our mum and our dad, our husband and our wife. The person receiving our bodyworking talents is our sister, our brother, our grandchild, our mate, our guru, our ancestor and our future generation. The person on the massage table is our Lord and our Lordess. This is Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of love and devotion wherein we treat each person as a Divine spark of the original Sacred fire.

Wonderfully and unavoidably, the person receiving your good intentions of well-being, vibrant health and serenity is

ULTIMATELY YOU!

Love, Mukti
