Shamanic Contributions to Yogic Enlightnement

Here is a lesson that I offer in many of my courses:
You have traveled for 7 days on a bullocks cart with 6 kids in tow to see your shaman for a pleasurable session in Nuad Borarn / Vedic Thai Massage-Assisted Yoga.
Surprisingly, the shaman has included in his or her options three other choices to address the best interest of your health.
These choices may displace the pleasurable treatment of Asissted Yoga with either the prescription for:
  1. Meditation
  2. Diet and Nutrition
  3. Movement and exercise
So…if the shaman’s sensitivity intuits today that we do not require a treatment in yoga massage for health and balance, customarily we must accept his prescription, however disappointing it may feel.  We must not be surprised as we are summarily dismissed with directives to return to our bullocks cart with our 6 children in tow, and accept the prescribed alternatives!

The following information is in no way representative of just Nuad Borarn and Yoga Massage. It is safe to say, in my opinion, that the following information is applicable to all the healing modalities including psychology, surgery and applicable to enhancing the quality of life in general. Yet being that I will choose to stay within my familiar territory, the art of Vedic Yoga Massage, I pray you find this information useful.

Perhaps we find that our Dharma is distinctly representing the therapeutic manipulative arts such as yoga, massage, dance, osteopathy or chiropractic to name just a few. Hatha, in AjurVed Theory, is a term for the Dharmaof the manipulative arts and exercise. Customarily, there are three other sensitivities to include in the manipulative art’s protocols. These three other talents are described also as Graces, Environments and Spirits. The names of the four ‘Graces’ are Metta, Puja, Prashad and of course Hatha. The wisdom from Metta, Puja, Prashad and Hathadecorates us with cherished knowledge and determination in the pursuance of expertise in transformational growth and healing.

Similar to the receiving of a valuable family jewel or a precious heirloom, the receiving of Metta is our first ‘Grace’.
Metta compels us to be ‘unconditionally kind and compassionate’ with all others. The definition of Metta, especially for those of us enthralled with the virtuous benefits and fine qualities of Yoga Bodywork, means to be open to offer everyone a session irrelevant of body type, personality, attraction etc.

Empowered with Metta Spirit, we can march directly into the center of any personal or professional resistance, including any resistance to giving a treatment, and we can expect glorious ‘Mysticism’ to accompany us with ultimate success.

Metta Spirit may include possessing the Art of Raising the Dead; the returning of a soul who has passed in death back to the present. This is a superb personal and spiritual achievement to adorn all of yoga with.

From my own personal studies, Raising the dead is recorded in the medical texts being discovered everywhere.  Sumerian, Vedic, South American, Aryan, and other cultures even just superficially examined, reveal medical texts that describe the technique of Raising the Dead; returning back to the present those who have passed in Death. Jesus, who I believe is alive today in the Himalayas as St Issa, with a lot of loving people around him, reportedly fulfilled this medical miracle.

I am familiar with similar stories from the Vedas around this topic of Raising the Dead due to my being fully surrendered-to and immersed in a strict Traditional Vedic Lifestyle for the last half of the 1970’s. My yogic sentiments were awakened from myth to reality.

Each and every morning, I joined with others, sometimes many and sometimes just a few, in a call and responseVedicritual. I Learned on several levels by reciting aloud Sanskrit slokas in response to a reader’s ‘call’.

Amidst a gathering of yoga devotees each morning from 5am to 7am, I submissively heard verses and purports from the Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam Epic.  This exposed me to the reality of mystical healings through energies that frequently included nothing more than a glance!  These Vedic stories repeatedly referred to dramas in the yogic arts about bringing a dead entity back to life.

This is Metta.

Perhaps another example of Metta Consciousness is found in the book entitled: Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. PY describes in His book an incident taking place high on the mountain ridges of the Himalayas. A yogic enthusiast [to put it mildly!] jumps from a cliff in the Himalayan Mountains as a final ‘Rite of Passage’. Demonstrating a personal commitment to a command issued by the Guru Babaji, love here manifested as an exploded and shattered body lying on the rocky shelf below. The Author PY concludes this incident with the assurance that The Divine Babaji reconstructed the faithful person to yogi status [and better] instantly. This is not easily comprehended as ‘Unconditional Loving Kindness,’ yet it is by many people’s sentiments, a demonstration ofMetta by both.

Let’s move on to the next Grace known as Puja and a description of Puja’s sweet therapeutic light.
Please refer to the essay entitled ‘The Puja Position’ for more description also.

Puja is time and space saturated with love prayers, positive concentration, good intention and any sentiments this side of worship and adoration. Puja is a composite experience of offering all great things in respect, honor and gratitude.

Remarkably, Puja can begin very ‘early’ in a session’s intention. Without being considered too extreme, an example of how early ‘early’ can be is as early as any interaction with our flying carpet…our mat.  Unrolling it, positioning it, spreading the blanket covering, and even retrieving the mat from its storage compartment can all be considered acceptable times to go ‘conscientious‘.

This ‘early’ is our coveted meditation. Take immediate advantage of this comforting capsule of time. The communication between me and this Puja time is pure joy, however surrendering, demanding or challenging the energy may seem. Our focus wants to be on the most desirable and pleasant feeling attainable.

A practitioner who performs this salutary dance of intimacy with time, the mat and all Puja’s moments, is exhibiting priceless expertise.  This I know sounds very peculiar as it is a very dear and confidential exchange with the space and time of the moment; yet where else is there to go and what else is there to do?

Now have lots of fun!

Bring this to any session always and as much as possible.
There is no sanctuary quite as attractive as the yoga massage room!

Our next Grace is Hatha.

Hatha is manipulative exercise and its benefits.
Let the exotic contortions begin.

Hatha manipulative exercise is movement rapture not unlike the rocking of a baby to attain comfort, confidence and security. Rapture, when accessed, is reported to be our divine home.

Rapture is nice just as a side benefit, yet Hatha movement also produces true inspiration and insight. The HathaGrace also functions to determine that the other three Spirits or Environments are balanced, and that they are not indicating an eminent need for attention.

The Hatha Grace proceeds to attain tranquility through passive and resistant ‘physical’ manipulation and secure management of breath and limb.

In the hierarchy of therapeutic choices, The Hatha sensitivity had remained for long time as subservient to the other Graces of Metta, Puja and Prashad. Yet now Hatha has frequently emerged as a first choice for rejuvenation even over meditation and diet.
The machine needs to move even as its parts show wear.
Enjoy the Hatha energy.

We come now to the fourth Grace known as Prashad.  Prashad means nourishment, which includes the feeding of wholeness to the emotions and soul as well as the body. A professional and consummate yoga bodywork practitioner displays distinct conscientious awareness and sensitivity to the potential need of Prashad as a remedial contribution to regaining fortitude and vitality for the receiver.

So…here’s a possible example:
My receiver today is not needing anything but a good meal [Prasad]. I am not detecting that my receiver’s Soul Grace is out of balance [Metta] and I am not detecting that my receiver’s movement and Exercise Grace is out of balance [Hatha] and finally I am not detecting that my receiver’s Meditation and Prayer is out of balance [Puja].
My receiver today only needs a good meal and a perfect cup of tea [Prashad].

Wear the Elements of Metta, Puja, Hatha and Prashad proudly.
Metta, Puja, Hatha and Prashad are brilliant facets and radiant gifts graciously possessed forever by the yogic healing arts!
