The purpose of this stretch is to release tension and prohibitive congestion from the hip, pelvis and lower-back regions. It is a well-known fact in medical surgery circles, that after a person has hip replacement surgery, this person will immediately need psychological treatments also!
My dear friend Phyllis is my cherished flight assistant who schedules my 30 to 40 flights a year for my teaching contracts. Her beautiful genius is also exhibited in her job as executive secretary running a medical office of several doctors. In one of our always-refreshing conversations, Phyllis shared with me about her lovely mother who had just undergone hip replacement surgery. She also shared with me that the surgeon had prescribed a psychologist immediately after the operation. The reason for this medical and psychological intervention is, according to the doctor, “the patient goes crazy”!
How sad.
Yet those of us experienced in the eastern perspective of health possess a very clear understanding of the need for this psychological intervention. The hips, aside from the fact that they are articulation junctures which determine inherent vulnerabilities on a physical level, THEY ALSO REPRESENT EMOTIONAL STABILITY, PERSONAL FOUNDATION, SPIRITUAL BALANCE IN CONSTITUTION AND DETERMINATION!
PROCEDURE:
Bend the receiver’s leg at the knee crease and place the foot/heel of this bent leg as close to the receiver’s gluteal/sit bone area as possible.
In order to execute this release/stretch well, it is important to stabilize the receiver’s foot/ankle so that the foot/ankle area may serve as a fulcrum apex to leverage the targeted assembly [quad attachments, hip and pelvic articulations] upwards. We have two options to do this. We can either sit ‘side saddle’ upon the receiver’s toes or if you have sufficient flexibility you can kneel vajra style [seizen] to securely ‘trap’ the receiver’s ankle between the inner condyles of your knees. The contours of the inner condyles of the knees and the contours of the receiver’s ankles fit perfectly together producing a very secure and comfortable sensation for both the receiver and the giver.
Interlace the fingers of both your hands together so as to create a finger lock and place your palms upon the receiver’s upper leg close to the groin area. Clamp down securely with your palms to grip the upper quad region. Lean backwards and draw the entire assembly towards you effectively stretching the anterior hip mechanism.
Repeat this procedure to two other positions on the quadriceps sequentially relocating your palms towards the knee region. Remember to hold each stretch for at least one complete breath or until you feel the ultra subtle myo-fascial release occur [listening for the echo].
Remember also to always release the stretches very slowly because the receiver’s energy is communicating just as much information upon the release as it is with the application. Sensitize yourself to this communication and your sessions will be filled with grace and intuition.
